Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
