The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
